Welcome to the World of First Wave Feminists:
The Suffrage Movement is one chapter in the History of the Womans Rights Movement. The History of the Suffrage Movement spans 72 years, 1848-1920 and gives us our heroines, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. This website introduces First Wave Feminists who organized themselves in the 19th century in order to break down the barriers that denied women full participation in the social, political and economic world in which they lived. The unique feature of this website is to integrate biographical sketches of lesser-known feminists who lived on the cutting edge of the Womans Rights Movement. Showing how these heroines worked together and the organizations they formed adds a new dimension to the sketches available in Biographical Dictionaries. This part of American History is lacking in American History Texts. The websites central figure is Rev. Phebe Ann Coffin Hanaford. Walk with this pioneer and reformer as minister, suffragist and author. Meet her colleagues and learn of their achievements in the face of strong opposition. If we view their successes without an understanding of the opposition they faced, we only see half the story. After reading Rev. Hanafords biography, click on any of the three segments of her career. Names that are underlined are cross references and will bring up a short biography of her colleagues. Under these categories are related press releases and references for further study. The author of the website, Loretta Cody, is currently writing the biography of Phebe Hanaford. Look for an update including biographies and press releases in this website.
